Life can get straight up boring. I know that isn't a fun way to look at things, but it's so true. We wake up, go to work or school or both, come home and relax on the couch or in bed, then go to sleep and repeat the same process again tomorrow. It's a repetitive cycle that gets us through everyday, but is that really all that there is to life? No!!!
Go home and instead of just sitting, try something new everyday until you've found something that you love! Hobbies are so necessary to breaking up the repetition of everyday life. I have listed a ton of hobbies below for you to try and linked a general page on how to get started below. I hope you have a blast reading it and find one or even a few things to interrupt your daily habits.
1. Art!
Oh? You said you're not good at art? Lies! There are so many different types and forms of art to try! Painting, drawing, sculpting, heck, there's even something called trash art! The only thing holding you back from being a super cool artist is you! Trust me, I thought that I was horrible at art and sold a few hundred dollars worth of tattoo designs with no issue.
2. Book club
Start one, find one, join one. If you like reading at all, join an in person or virtual book club! Most universities and libraries host weekly or monthly book clubs often sorted by age groups, preferences, and sometimes even preferred gender. A lot of book clubs are free and you often borrow or sometimes even get to keep your books!
3. Baking
Fun times, trying new things, and yummy foods! What's not to love about that? While baking can be time consuming, cost a little money, and sometimes even be a little stressful, it can also create super fun times and memories. Get your mom, kids, friends, or significant other and bake away or allow yourself to relax on your own while kneading a ball of dough.
4. Candle making
Maybe not what you were expecting, but candle making is fun, inexpensive, and has results that fill your entire house. Crayons, essential oils, wicks, and some wax are all you need for colorful, beautiful candles or candle sticks!
5. Crafts
Yes, crafts are different than art. Google, Pinterest, just look up cool crafts to try. This can be so fun, time consuming, and you can have some crazy cool outcomes. Plus, friends and family can join in on the crafty fun.
6. DIY's
Go look up some fun DIY's, grab all of your necessary supplies, and get to creating! I've seen outside furniture made, cabinets completely remade, and super cool jewelry made by people with no experience.
7. Drama
Most towns and cities have at least one preforming arts center where you can audition and join a community of people interest in all kinds of performance.
8. Embroidery
Embroidery definitely sounds like something a grandmother would do, but there are so many cool options once you get the hang of it. Just think of all the cool clothes and accessories that have embroidery instead of screen printing.
9. Experiments
Dude why the heck not? I mean just try one. I'll calm down on the peer pressure now, but there are some really cool experiments laid out for kids and adults to try that can teach you something cool while being fun.
10. Fishing
Some of my favorite childhood memories are a lake fishing with my dad. It's fun and virtually harmless to the fish, but also can provide you with food if necessary. All of the rods, reels, and bait can keep you entertained for days, and it's loads of fun to take some friends out on the dock with you.
11. Filming
Capturing moments on film create tangible memories. This is a super fun hobby to pick up that you can always look back on and enjoy.
12. Fashion Design
There is nothing cooler than someone complimenting your clothes, and you being able to say that you made them. I used to create clothes for my dolls when I was little and now I'm going to start on a Cinderella ball gown in the next few weeks. The possibilities that designing and making your own clothes provides is endless and so much fun.
13. Graphic Design
Graphic design is something that I do on a daily basis. I love creating digital house plans, pictures, and tattoo designs on my detachable tablet. Plus, if you have a tablet, iPad, Surface, or anything like that you can just download a free sketching app.
14. Gardening
Gardening is super cool because you actually put work and effort into a product that you can really enjoy. How much better does your body feel after eating freshly cooked food? It'll feel even better when that fresh food comes straight from your labor! Plus, a lot of people believe gardening is only during a portion of the year, but there are plenty of winter crops. If a full garden is too much, here's a really cool herb garden that you can keep in your house!
15. Horseshoes
This game was another huge part of my childhood. There's a horseshoe pit in my current backyard, the backyard at my old house, and there's another pit in my grandparents yard. It's a fun game full of strategy that you can practice alone, play 1v1 or compete with teams!
16. Herping
Herping can be... well... a little dangerous? But super cool and fun! You get to learn a lot about the reptiles you're finding, just make sure to research a little to make sure you're being safe. I don't want to see any of you with snake bites.
17. Insect Collecting
This is another fun learning experience. You create little habitats, start an ant farm, or just observe the little critters in the wild.
18. Jewelry Making
Love love love this one. You can sell all the jewelry or keep it for yourself. I actually just ordered a jewelry kit that I am so excited to get so I can finish turning my raw stones into beautiful pieces.
19. Jigsaw Puzzles
Jigsaw puzzles are fun, require concentration, can be spread out over a few days, and can be glued and framed to keep forever. You can get custom jigsaw puzzles, wooden jigsaw puzzles, or just basic ones.
20. Knife Throwing
My brother, cousin, church friends, and almost all of my ex boyfriends love throwing knives, but that doesn't mean girls can't join in on the fun. There are different types of knives, methods, techniques, and styles that you can learn and use.
21. Knitting
I learned the very beginner basics of kitting in church a few years ago from a friend who was absolutely amazing at it and oh my gosh. There are so many different clubs, yarns, needles, patterns, everything! She even hand spun some of her yarn! It's a super cool and even profitable hobby to really get into and learn.
22. Lego Building
There are Lego sets for adults. Read that again. Thousands of pieces, hours of stress-free entertainment, and so much fun. My ex and I built the flower bouquet and it was so much fun. I highly recommend, but warning, you might get addicted.
23. Long Boarding
Long boarding, in my opinion, is a lot easier to start learning than actual skateboarding and a lot of cities have a skate park hidden somewhere. Long boards can start of pretty inexpensive, but make sure to wear proper protection and be careful when you're boarding. Plus, if you want to flirt with a girl and she's okay with it, offer to teach her how to board. You'll see what I mean.
24. Mountain Biking
This is a pretty cool hobby that can become a really expensive hobby, but it's still really fun without splurging on thousand dollar bikes and custom seats. I have a few family members that really love mountain biking and go almost every weekend. This is a fun hobby to do alone or with friends and family,
25. Mushroom Hunting
Now I know, mushrooms have a few different purposes, but I am supporting hunting for safely and legally edible shrooms. My grandfather does this and we've actually fried up and eaten some of his finds. Believe it or not, there are actually clubs, papers, websites, and magazines full of mushroom hunters, which is pretty cool in my opinion.
26. Nail Art
Creating nail art is cool for any person who can follow directions and has a little patience. There are tons of nail art kits to try out and experiment with and the internet is full of tutorials. Or you can just pull out some polish and get creative!
27. Noodling
Do you live near a lake or even a pond? Go get dirty and catch some catfish with your hands! Okay, it may sound a little yucky, but when you catch your fist fish, you will be in love with this one. I would recommend some research to make sure your methods are safe for you and the fish, then go give it a shot!
28. Origami
Everyone has paper, just do a little folding! Remember the fortune tellers from elementary school that we would use to predict our futures? Origami! Just search the internet for tons of tutorials and maybe even go crazy and invest in some origami paper.
29. Orchestra
I can kind of play cello, my friend at work plays piano, my dad plays the trumpet. Boom! Mini orchestra! Or maybe you're really talented and you can join a local orchestra or even just take lessons. Learning to play a musical instrument is super cool and often unnoticed, but I think it's awesome and everyone should at least know a few keys.
30. Photography
You don't need special lenses or a fancy camera, just start working with your phone. Put it in portrait mode, turn on the grid feature, and learn a few basics. Reddit has something called ITAP or I Took A Picture where anyone can share photographs that they've taken and get constructive criticism, positive reaffirmations, or just likes. This allows you to grow, learn, and enjoy yourself without a lot of risk or spending money.
31. Pole Dancing
Tehe. Yea. Pole dancing, but maybe not in a club. There are lots of gyms or private centers where you can learn to pole dance completely away from the club. It's fine, uses a lot of your muscles, and is a super awesome workout and can even be a little surprise for your partner.
32. Paint Ball
Funnnnnnnnnn. Smelly, but fun. Remember the paintball scene in Ten Things I Hate About You? Yea, who wants to recreate that with me? Seriously though, paintball is so much fun and lightly dangerous. As long as you're wearing the proper gear, you can't really get hurt.
33. Podcast Hosting
Do you have anything at all that you think other people should hear? Podcast it! Find something that you're interested in and share it! Maybe you don't make hundreds of thousands of dollars off of it, but maybe you do! Just share what you know, are feeling and thinking.
34. Quilting
Lots of craft stores actually have lessons that you can sign up for, so give that a shot. Once you figure out what's going on, do something important to you! There are lots of crazy cool quilt ideas and patterns that can occupy hours of your time.
35. Qigong
Okay, think ancient yoga. This is an exercise that involves breathing and focus and can really help you find your Zen. Not many public gyms teach the art of Gigong, but there's nothing wrong with watching videos and learning on your own then maybe sharing it with others!
36. Rafting
Would you like an adrenaline thrill ride? White water rafting. Not your thing? There are much smoother waters to raft down. Either way, I highly recommend rafting for a fun activity with friends or family. Just find a tube and a river!
37. Rappelling
I've never personally tried rappelling, but it sounds and looks super fun. With proper safety gear and training, rappelling can be fun, safe, and provide you with a really cool life experience that most people are too scared to try.
38. Rock Tumbling
I do this! I bought a rock tumbler and a bunch of rocks and am now trying to make my own jewelry with the rocks that I've tumbled. It's super cool to see the dingy rocks that look like something out of your yard turn into beautiful crystals.
39. Scrapbooking
Yea, I know. Something else that sounds like an activity of a grandmother, but it's still something super cool to try! You can give scrap books as gifts, keep them to look back at later, and enjoy them for years to come. You can get scrap book kits with themes and lots of fun stickers and such. Trust me, once you start it will become addictive.
40. Soap Making
Believe it or not, we can do better for our skin than Bath and Body Works. There are tons of tutorials to make your own soap that allow you to know exactly what you're putting on your skin and smell just how you want.
41. Tapestry
Cool design pieces tell amazing stories! Why not make your own? As time consuming as this hobby can be, it is super relaxing and enjoyable to take part in.
42. Tattooing
I was so excited for the t's strictly because of this one. You can draw and sell tattoos, but you can also buy this tattooing kit that I really like and practice on fake skin. I really want to buy a bus and travel the world tattooing people, but the lack of security brings me a tad bit of fear.
43. Upcycling
So basically, you thrift clothes, take them home and sew or change them however you would like, and boom, you have your own custom clothing. It's cool, unique, and can be a lot of fun if you choose to go thrifting with friends.
44. Videogame Creating
So many people play video games for hours every single day, but rarely do we ever think to create our own. Branch out! Get creative! Have fun! Make your own game and then challenge all of your friends to try playing it.
45. Volunteering
This is probably one of the most touching hobbies that you could try. Just go to a local homeless shelter, non profit, or helpful foundation and ask how you can volunteer. The amazing stories that you'll hear and experiences that you will gain make every minute worth your time and effort.
46. Vinyl Records
Collecting vinyl records is a cool hobby that allows you to connect with new and old souls who love music with a little white noise. There are plenty of clubs where people collect records and they're somewhat unique to have these days.
47. Welding
Most people only look at welding as an occupation, but being able to fix things that most people can't is convenient and even impressive to some people. It's a cool trade to have knowledge in even if you aren't a professional.
48. Winemaking
Abide by your local laws for alcohol, but you can buy wine making kits and create your own bottle of spicy grape juice! If wine isn't your thing, look into making your own beer or whisky for an enjoyable twist!
49. Yoga
It's good for the mind, body, and soul. Getting in a good stretch while focusing on your breath and heartbeat is extremely relaxing and enjoyable for most. For your first few sessions, I recommend going to a class just to make sure you're doing all of the poses correctly, but then you can break free and follow a video, app, or yourself for free, at home lessons. Plus, you can get super cute yoga outfits and yoga mats!
50. Zumba
Zumba is my favorite exercise. You get to dance until you break a sweat and have fun with the people around you. I definitely recommend going to a class to get the full experience of this one. Most gyms will allow entrance for one day or one class at a small fee so that you don't have to pay for a membership, so maybe try it out that way before making a commitment. And if you find that you love it, spice things up with one of these cute little belts!
So, before you go and sit on the couch to rewatch another episode on Netflix, find something that you can try today or make plans to try in the near future! Have fun and make your life extraordinary!
I love you :)
